- Gealliadh
Gealliadh is a secondborn Sylvari, awakened during the Cycle of Dusk. He is a fully qualified physician, pathologist and epidemiologist who began his medical career as a mender in the Grove. He now works as a clinician in Hope's Rest.
Biography
Early Life
Awakened in 1304 amidst the Cycle of Dusk, Gealliadh, 34 years old, became rapidly fascinated by the Dream's psychological impact on his kind. Driven by compassion and a yearning for knowledge, he gravitated towards assisting struggling, newly emerged Sylvari to understand and regulate their emotions. It was here that his empathetic heart was first forged, shaping the approach to medical practice he developed in subsequent years. His approach to mending has often been compared to that of human mental health psychotherapy, focusing on adapting ways of thinking and behaviors.
Early Medical Career and Studies
Seeking broader scope for his work, Gealliadh enrolled into the Durmond Priory in 1305. Faced with Zhaitan's risen tide, his focus shifted to treating Tyrians ravaged by the Elder Dragon's noxious magic. With no true cure in sight, his care evolved to prioritise the easing of suffering and offering a dignified end, establishing methods still used today.
Delving into the risen's biology, Gealliadh revealed a vast, unexplored landscape of disease. With relentless spirit, he unearthed life, death, and everything between in the context of Tyrian Medicine. His groundbreaking discoveries began subtly transforming healthcare centres as Gealliadh shared his expertise, addressing everything from common maladies to complex treatments utilising cutting-edge technologies.
Yet, an insatiable drive for knowledge led him further still. Gealliadh sought to grasp the very forces that govern health and vitality, becoming an epidemiologist with remarkable insight. His meticulous investigations shaped strategies to counteract illness, develop research strategies into how often disease occured in different groups of people and why, improve overall patient experience, and guide healthcare management on a broader scale. In 1316, Gealliadh completed his final medical degree, and went on to establish his first practice later that year in Garenhoff.
Conflict Within
Serving during Mordremoth's devestating Maguuma campaign, Gealliadh bore witness to the jungle dragon's insidious grasp. Despite countless lives saved on the battlefield, his own soul succumbed to Mordremoth's twisted whispers. After years as a mordrem thrall, he was miraculously rescued by combined Pact and Priory foces, a gruelling path back to his true self lay ahead.
Gealliadh's path was enriched by certain members of his kin, notably his sibling Naelraughan, who became intricately involved in Gealliadh's recovery and reintegration into society. Naelraughan experienced a profound realization of what he truly cherished: protecting his kind rather than seeking revenge against their enemies. Witnessing Gealliadh's return to the loving embrace of their mother, the Pale Tree, solidified Naelraughan's attachment to her, their kin, and his place among them. He grew emotionally invested in Gealliadh's recovery, visiting him weekly and finding hope and resolution in his redemption. Likewise, Gealliadh found a guiding light in Naelraughan during the darker periods of his recovery. The two developed a deep and fast friendship, which endures to this day.
Like for many reformed mordrem, echoes of Mordremoth's malevolent presence lingers, forever changing him. Intense bursts of temper now threaten Gealliadh's otherwise meticulously constructed composure. His demeanor never returned to what it was during his early life.
Current Life and Relationships
Though Gealliadh has always struggled to make and keep friends, there are a few he has held onto dearly. Among them, Naelraughan stands as one of his closest companions, a bond forged during Gealliadh's recovery from the blight of Mordremoth and his minions. Despite often being separated by the demands of their respective duties, they repeatedly find their paths crossing. These reunions provide ample opportunities to share stories and reaffirm their enduring importance to each other.
Joining the Wandering Alliance of Tyria in 1335, Gealliadh began working within the clinical operations of the Hope's Rest facility. Bonds formed within the guild; in fellow Sylvari and medic, Marjolei, he found profound kinship of a kind, unique soul among their species. Their collaborative ventures within the clinic are a testament to the power of Sylvari connection, and together they can often be found working and relaxing together in the clinic's many lounge spaces. Gealliadh and Marjolei's hard work in the clinic has allowed room for growth, seeing Niah and Eliza to join as clinicians, providing their expertise in magical healing and alchemy respectfully.
Though efforts to bury his mordrem past proved fruitless, an unexpected encounter with a perculiar Sylvari named Heihoka dragged him back into the abyss of the jungle dragon's echoic clutches. Rescued by steadfast guild members, including Orion Sciolto, a tender bond once bloomed. But within Gealliadh's reformed life, he struggled adapting to the human complexities surrounding Orion's established family. This new chapter of Gealliadh's new life revealed unexpected solutions to social challenges that he has yet to conquer, such as how to change diapers, how to do a school run, and how to exist within a pre-established family. Tragically, the nature of their shared business meant that their relationship could not be sustained, and they separated in 1336.
Skills and Pursuit of Knowledge
A profound curiosity has Gealliadh scrutinising flesh weaving, a complex practice once employed solely in the art of dark necromancy. His ambition runs deeper than mastering this controvertial technique; through ethical adaptation, he aims to transform a weapon of malevolence into a powerful tool for healing. Additionally, his harrowing mordrem past allows a subtle perception of Mordremoth's energies, though, without practical, immediate purpose. This awareness leaves him ever restless amidst verdant, natural beauty.
